Robodock 09/23/04
Amsterdam, Netherlands
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali
Raagini Intro
Total White Out
Hot Pants
Through the night Softly
Children of the Dum Dum

Big festival, big stage, big (humungous) sound, pro lighting, fog, strobes, way rock and roll. F-Space totally filled and resonated the massive building.

Other Bands: Double Nelson (they kicked ass) Lot’s of machine art.

#57
Nijmagen, Netherlands 09/22/04
Big Pants, Squat
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali
Katatonik Jam
Total White Out
Hot Pants
Through the night Softly
Children of the Dum Dum

Amazing gig, great audience. Scot demolished Volatile at the end of the set after he broke multiple springs during the gig. Weird power in the space, some equipment fried.

#56

Secret Island Gig in the forest on the remote island in the North Sea. Cold and wet.

Great night with lot’s of energy. Was the day that Johnny Ramone died. Best club gig to date. Ethan was ON. Small audience but the music was bliss.

#54

Small room, shit PA, just a few friends.

#53
Lit Lounge, New York 09/14/04
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali
Flogging the Slaves
Total White Out
Hot Pants
Through the night Softly

Ok Gig, good reaction, shit PA but Matt made it sound good. Small cramped underground room.

Other Bands: Warton Tiers (provided backline)

#52
Burning Man 09/04/04
Inside Thunderdome
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali/(Enrique on vocals)
Flogging the Slaves
Total White Out

Great set though we were tired from all the shows.
Comment from Matt: Slay…. Perfect….. I’m drunk.

F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali

Burning Man 09/03/04
At Illumination
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali
Flogging the Slaves
Total White Out
Hot Pants
Through the night Softly

Great set, great audience, big fire. Illumination setting off their fire sculpture while F-Space sonically pummeled. Audience went nuts. New vocals added on Total White Out (with gravel playa voice)

#49
Burning Man 09/02/04
At THERM under Ryan’s Eye
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali
Total White Out
Hot Pants

Good set.

Burning Man 09/02/04
At THERM under Ryan’s Eye
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali
Flogging the Slaves
Total White Out
Hot Pants
Through the night Softly

Band obviously reformed, Ethan vowing to not touch his knobs during the songs. Good set, great environment, great audience, and great mix as Matt was finally there.

#47
Burning Man 09/02/04
By the Man at 4 am
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali
Flogging the Slaves
Total White Out
Hot Pants
Through the night Softly

Cold, windy, white out, Ethan’s guitar was a distorted sludge. Very depressing after all the tweaking to get the sound dialed the night before. So much discontent that the band broke up.

#46
Burning Man 09/01/04
3:00 and Esplanade
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali
Total White Out
Hot Pants
Through the night Softly

Good set but we were getting tired as it was the third performance that night. Got a noise complaint at Burning Man, go figure.
Comment: “I was having a horrible Burning Man and was ready to go home, but you saved me”

#45
Burning Man 09/01/04
3:00 and Esplanade
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali
Total White Out
Hot Pants
Through the night Softly

Finally got the mix, one of the best sets F-Space has ever played.
Comments: “You totally destroyed my power of speech” “I had a major boner through the set”

#44
Burning Man 09/01/04
3:00 and Esplanade
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali
Flogging the Slaves
Hot Pants
Through the night Softly

Really bad mix, ech. Matt wasn’t there.

#43
Burning Man 08/31/04
9:00 and Esplanade
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali
Total White Out
Through the night Softly
Hot Pants
Children of the Dum Dum

Good energetic performance during a slight calm in the whether. Audience screamed for more. A woman yelled “Finally good music on the Playa” Scot melted all of his cables off of Volatile during the gig.

#42
Burning Man 08/31/04
9:00 and Esplanade
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali
Total White Out
Hot Pants

Performed in a total white out. Song of the same name created during the onslaught, while dust and sound pummeled the audience.

#41
How to Destroy the Universe: Part 2 Festival, 08/07/04
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali
Hot Pants
Through the Night Softly
The Gathering Pools
Charity and Hope

Other Bands: Aesthetic Meat Front, Binky, The Turks

Great night. Great energy. The first three songs came off very well, Gathering Pools was the best we’ve played it. Charity and Hope crashed and burned (likely to never rise again, perhaps it’s best to put that one down)

#40
How to Destroy the Universe: Part 2 Festival, 08/06/04
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali
Flogging the Slaves
Through the Night Softly
The Gathering Pools
Hot Pants

Other Bands: Black Ice.

Pretty good, low energy for F-Space though.

#39 FFF Sonoma, CA 04/09/04
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali
Flogging the Slaves
Through the Night Softly
Hot Pants

Other Bands: Flower Cops

In Brett’s back yard. Such a laugh for the runaway locomotive that is F-Space to play in the Wine Country. Lot of neighbors wondering if the Big One had hit. Of course the cops showed up but Brettt talked them in to letting us play one more. Surprised they let us as the fire was blasting almost as high as Ethan’s amps.

#38 The Shipyard, Berkeley, CA 03/06/04
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali
Flogging the Slaves
Through the Night Softly
The Gathering Pools
Hot Pants
The Torching of Egeria

An utter blast, one of the funnest shows F-Space has ever played. F-Space performed a full fire show, in the shipyard which is a compound of shipping containers, art and a metal shop, in front of Kiki’s Egeria firefall fountain. Scot lit the fountain on fire with his flame thrower at the end of the set. Ethan was so sick with food poisoning the night before he almost didn’t make it.

#37 Studio Z, San Francisco 02/27/04
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali
The Gathering Pools
Through the Night Softly
Hot Pants

Other Bands: Drop Black Sky

Not a very good night, had trouble with sound and lack of energy in the room.

#36 Sound Rewound, The Lab, San Francisco 02/25/04
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali
The Gathering Pools
Through the Night Softly
Hot Pants

Other Bands: Pamela Z

20th anniversary of the Lab’s exhibition of sound. First live rendition of The Gathering Pools which sounded great in the space. A really fun show, very relaxed, great sound, fire, energy. Also Scot’s first live vocalization.

#35 Los Angeles, 12/20/03
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali
Flogging the Slaves
Through the Night Softly
Charity and Hope
Hot Pants

Other Bands: Jet Fuel, Spindrift,

Free party in a warehouse space for Ethan's 40th Birthday. Went on at about 2:30 am. Ethan went ape shit overdrive with Thor on Charity and Hope. Scot fired up the flamethrower at the end of Hot Pants. Matt Callahan (adopted for good) ran sound and Kimie Leary did Merch. Greg Grunky from Savage Republic raved about the set.

“F-Space absolutely killed!
Then F Space threw it into drive and nobody knew what hit 'em! Scot Jenerik, playing his various percussion contraptions, and drummer Aleph Kali established a complete rhythm lock pounding out patterns of amazing intricacy and intensity while Ethan added snaky melodies and sheets of texture with his guitar armada. The hall had too much flammable stuff for them to go totally apeshit with the pyrotechnics but Scott did fire up one of his smaller devices that shot out bursts of propane flame as it was played kinda like the time Granny's stove exploded. All this at a volume level that at times made early Swans sound like Raffi and sent the lightweights heading for the hills. Overall a stunning display of sonic ferocity and beauty the likes of which L.A. hasn't seen in quite a spell.”

#34 SF Liberation Radio Benefit, 1015 Folsom, San Francisco, CA 12/11/03
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali
Flogging the Slaves
Through the Night Softly
Charity and Hope

Other Bands:

Benefit for SF Liberation Radio, in their attempt to get the FCC off their backs. Went on late, with no sound check, and had to cut the gig short because of limited time. Matt mixed on the fly. Paul from the Burning Man scene screamed "Oh God I've missed you guys" at the end of the set.

#33 How to Destroy the Universe, Studio Z, San Francisco, CA 12/07/03
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali
Flogging the Slaves
Through the Night Softly
Charity and Hope
Hot Pants

Other Bands: Mermen, Punk Rock Orchestra, Neither Neither World, The Serotonins

First in hopefully a series of SF festivals. Really fun evening with lot's of energy. Matt Callahan's first gig helping out with sound. Over 300 people came out on a cold wet December night. The review from the Bay Guardian says it all.

"Then came the moment I'd been waiting for. F-Space battered the unsuspecting audience with a wall of noise. Port's instrumentation on an electric 12-string maintained the breakneck speed and ominous tones of early Savage Republic. He'd loop a string of notes into a mixer, then switch guitars, or forsake them for a homemade instrument created out of two thick metal springs stretched along the length of a four-foot-long segment of pipe, which he alternately beat on and picked up and let drop to the floor.

Jenerik used drumsticks and even a violin bow to elicit the most raw and, at times, excruciating sounds from a similar instrument propped on a metal sawhorse. Kali added the energy of a runaway locomotive on drums.

The result was apocalyptic: the music summoned a feral, destructive trance state that implied a catastrophic act of nature, a march through the desert on the path to war, or the offender's mental state during a crime of passion." -(Camille T. Taiara) SFBG Dec 17, 2003

#32 Curve Bar, San Francisco, CA 11/08/03
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali
Flogging the Slaves
Through the Night Softly
Charity and Hope

Other Bands: Sub Arachinoid Space,

F-Space set up their PA in the back of the space, and went on right after . Limited sound check, lot's of sound problems during the gig. Aleph broke his bass drum head during Charity and Hope so they couldn’t finish with Hot Pants.

#31 Decompression, Burning Man, San Francisco, CA 10/12/03
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Kali
Flogging the Slaves
Through the Night Softly
Charity and Hope
Discipline

Outdoor street festival for Burning Man. Scot blasted huge fireballs from Volatile. First performance with Aleph Kali, lot's of old fans blown away by the addition of Aleph on drums.

#30 Burning Man, Thunderdome, Black Rock City, NV 08/31/03
F-Space: Jenerik/Port
Hot Pants
Something
Charity and Hope

F-Space performed inside the Thunderdome, a huge geodesic dome in the style of the Mad Max movie. The audience was up on the outside of the dome looking down on the performance. Scot's fireballs floating up toward the spectators. At the end of the set, Scot kicked Volatile across the arena and smashed it to pieces. The audience went Ape Shit.

#29 Burning Man, Radio Free Burning Man, Black Rock City, NV 08/30/03
F-Space: Jenerik/Port
Hot Pants
Something
Charity and Hope

Kiki who once wrote" F-Space ends every song sounding like the entire power grid for the western US just went off line" was at the gig. F-Space had been using their own generator for all the shows, well this time they plugged into the Radio Free Burning Man generator, and blew the power on the first strike on Volatile. Not only knocked out their sound, but knocked out the radio station as well.

#28 Burning Man, Playa after the burn, Black Rock City, NV 08/30/03
F-Space: Jenerik/Port
Hot Pants
Something
Charity and Hope

On the playa after the burn as revelers were wandering back.

#27 Burning Man, At the Man, Black Rock City, NV 08/29/03
F-Space: Jenerik/Port
Hot Pants
Something
Charity and Hope

One of the more sonically dialed BM shows. Relaxed and powerful.

#26 Burning Man, K-Svert Radio, Black Rock City, NV 08/29/03
F-Space: Jenerik/Port
Hot Pants
Charity and Hope

In somewhat of a vs. there was no question that F-Space destroyed Performed at the K SVERT stage on the Esplanade.

#25 Burning Man, Playa at 9:00, Black Rock City, NV 08/28/03
F-Space: Jenerik/Port
Hot Pants
Something
Charity and Hope

Out by Thunderdome. Speakers turned both in and out. Diminished the impact of the performance.

#24 Burning Man, Sun System, Black Rock City, NV 08/27/03
F-Space: Jenerik/Port
Hot Pants
Something
Charity and Hope

F-Space played through an 8 channel system with a computer interface that threw each channel around to different speakers. Interesting sonic landscape for the audience, extremely disorienting for the band. Like playing in a cavern with multiple echoes.

#23 Burning Man, Esplanade at 3:00, Black Rock City, NV 08/26/03
F-Space: Jenerik/Port
Hot Pants
Something
Charity and Hope

Super fun energetic performance.

#22 Bottom Of The Hill, San Francisco, CA 03/27/03
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Connell
Invocation
Bombay Blood
Sniper
Percussion Jam
Charity and Hope

Good sound on stage, shitty sound in the audience. Volatile crapped out. Still Charity and Hope was epic. This recording ended up as the base underlying track for Charity and Hope on the Preliminary Impact Report CD.

#21 Timothy North Benefit, SOMARTS, San Francisco, CA 03/25/03
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Connell/Kali
Invocation
Charity and Hope

Just as Tim's body was falling apart, this set crashed and burned. Limited rehearsal time, and none with the two drummers together. Volatile had no sound, and during Invocation Scot was attached by a schizoid woman. Scot is so in the Zone during the performances that he said it took all the energy that he had to not put Thor through the Woman's forehead.

#20 Synorgy Solstice Burn, West Desert, UT 12/21/02
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Connell
Insurrection
Sniper
Charity and Hope
Fucking Heathens

Outdoor gig in the Utah Desert for the Synorgy offshoot of Burning Man. Was cold and snowing while they played. Ethan played with gloves with a couple of the fingers chopped off. Scot was the only warm one blasting lot's of fire. The audience was blown away. Many people said their lives were forever altered.

#19 Burt's Tiki Lounge, Salt Lake City, UT 12/20/02
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Connell
Invocation
Jam
Percussion Jam
Charity and Hope

Ethan’s 39th birthday. In between a gig and a rehearsal at Charity's bar. F-Space jammed on various themes. Charity and Hope was written during this session.

#18 Urban Lounge, Salt Lake City, UT 12/19/02
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Connell
Insurrection
Sniper
The Gates of Hell

First gig of the newly reformed F-Space. The first time that Scot, Ethan and Joel had all three been on stage together. During the first song, Scot went ape shit overdrive, slamming thor repeatedly on the ground, during which he broke a finger and ripped his hand open in three places. As he staggered back on to the stage in a daze, blood dripping on to the floor, Ethan said "I think Scot has issues with Utah". The audience was blasted into another dimension.

#17 Splung, San Francisco, CA 01/27/01
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Mulford
Pig Fucker
Arabian
Children of the Dum Dum

A jam with Gabriel Mulford on guitar for Scot's 38th birthday party.

#16 Vulcan Studios, Oakland, CA 12/12/98
F-Space: Jenerik/Port

A total disaster that sparked a 4 year hiatus. The only show that Scot has ever walked off stage of in the middle of the set. Scot had just created Volatile.

#15 Sound Unwound, The Lab, San Francisco, CA 12/5/98
F-Space: Jenerik/Port

A fun night, though a bit uneven, of solo performance by Scot, into a collaboration with Thomas Dimuzio, into F-Space.

#14 Lava Festival, Sandcrawler, Oakland, CA 9/18/98
F-Space: Jenerik/Port

Energetic performance during a noise festival.

#13 Burning Man, Black Rock Desert, NV, 9/6/98
F-Space: Jenerik/Port

#12 Burning Man, Black Rock Desert, NV, 9/5/98
F-Space: Jenerik/Port

#11 Burning Man, Black Rock Desert, NV, 9/4/98
F-Space: Jenerik/Port

#10 Burning Man, Black Rock Desert, NV, 9/3/98
F-Space: Jenerik/Port

#9 Zoot Suite, Portland, OR 6/13/98
F-Space: Jenerik/Port

Long drive, disaster of a show, didn’t get paid. At one point in the set the owner of the space told the sound guy to go tell them to stop playing, Scot was in the process of blasting his flame thrower, the sound guy told him he was going nowhere near the stage.

#8 F is for Flame, Abstrakt Zone, Emeryville, CA 6/4/98
F-Space: Jenerik/Port

Vordo’s space. Lot’s and Lot’s of fire, and Ethan in a pink leotard with “too hot to handle” stenciled on the front. Great show.

#7 Cyberbuss Costume Ball, Griffith St, San Francisco, CA 5/30/98
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/Mulford

Big, heavy, massive rhythms. During the set Scot sliced his forehead open on a piece of steel. Most people didn’t notice the blood running down his face. Kiki’s first introduction to the band. Wrote a review with the classic line “they finished sounding like the entire power grid for the Western US just went off line”.

#6 The Fancy Freaky Formal Ball, Cell, San Francisco, CA 4/11/98
F-Space: Jenerik/Port

First live performance with Thor. Also the first rendition of Insurrection

#5 Day of Noise, KZSU, Stanford, CA 4/2/98
F-Space: Jenerik/Port

Scot unveiled his new creation Thor

#4 23five Benefit, The Lab, San Francisco, CA 11/8/97
F-Space: Jenerik/Port

An incredible night of sound, projections, sushi and beer for an over capacity crowd at the Lab. F-Space closed the night with an explosive set of percussive destruction.

#3 Burning Man, Black Rock Desert, NV 8/31/97
F-Space: Jenerik/Port/ T'Chung

F-Space performance into T'Chung performance into a jam between the two bands. Documented by a German film crew for the film Burning Man 2020. It took Scot over 100 strikes to break sub-linear in half. The audience went Ballistic and can be seen in full frenzy in the movie.

#2 Burning Man, Black Rock Desert, NV 8/29/97
F-Space: Jenerik/Port
Equilibrium

Scot’s composition “Equilibrium” performed on Sub Linear, with Ethan’s noisy guitar wash over and through the piece. When Scot broke Sub Linear in half at the end of the set, the whole contraption fell off the stage and took a chunk out of photographer Gregory Cowley’s arm. This provided Greg with a commemorative scarification of the first real F-Space performance. Documented by a German film crew for the film Burning Man 2020, directed by Christoph Gampl and Andreas Kukutsch.

#1 Burning Man, Black Rock Desert, NV 8/28/97
F-Space: Jenerik/Port

No PA so Scot and Ethan performed on flaming oil drums next to a piano frame where other friends joined in the percussive mayhem. This is also the show where Scot lit himself on fire, had to do the drop and roll, and while drumming on a flaming oil drum smashed his left index finger, blowing all of the meat out of the tip. The jam went on for another half hour while Scot drummed and spread blood all over his body and face. A fitting beginning for F-Space.
